Preheat oven to 450°F. In a small bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until blended. Beat in the all-purpose flour and vanilla extract until a crumbly dough forms. Press the dough onto the bottom of a greased 9-inch springform pan.

In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and 1/4 cup of sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Pour the cream cheese mixture over the prepared crust. In another large bowl, toss the thinly sliced tart apples with the remaining 1/3 cup of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Spoon the cinnamon-sugar apple mixture over the cream cheese layer.

Bake for 10 minutes at 450°F. Reduce the oven temperature to 400°F and bake for an additional 25 minutes. Sprinkle the sliced almonds over the top and continue baking for 10-15 minutes more, or until the top is lightly browned and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the torte to cool completely on a wire rack before removing the springform pan. Refrigerate the Buttery Apple Crumble Torte before serving.
