Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5-7 minutes. Add the egg whites one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beating well after each addition. Pour the batter into the prepared pans.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely. Spread the frosting between the layers and over the top and sides of the cake.
