Preheat oven to 350°F. Bring a small saucepan of water to a boil. Add the asparagus and cook for 1-2 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain and place in a 1-quart baking dish coated with cooking spray. Top with the fish fillets.

In a small saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until tender, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the flour, salt, and pepper until blended. Gradually whisk in the milk and bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 1-2 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted. Pour the cheese sauce over the fish and asparagus.
