In a large pot, cook the ground beef and onions over medium-high heat until the beef is no longer pink, about 10-12 minutes, breaking the beef into crumbles. Drain the excess fat, then stir in the cooked bacon, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, sugar, and salt. Heat the mixture through.

Spread 1 cup of the meat sauce into each of two greased 13x9-inch baking dishes. Layer each dish with 4 lasagna noodles, overlapping as needed, then top with 1-2/3 cups of the meat sauce and 1-1/3 cups of the shredded cheese. Repeat the layers twice.

Bake the lasagna, covered, for 40 minutes. Then, uncover and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly. Let the lasagna stand for 15 minutes before serving.
