Festive Twisted Wreath Cookies

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 400°F. In a large bowl, cream the butter, shortening, and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5-7 minutes. Beat in the eggs, orange zest, and almond extract. Gradually beat in the flour.

  2. 2

Divide the dough in half and tint one portion green with the food coloring. For each wreath, shape two 6-inch ropes using 2 teaspoons of plain dough for one and 2 teaspoons of green dough for the other. Place the two ropes side by side, press them together lightly, then twist several times. Shape the twisted ropes into a circle and pinch the ends to seal. Place the wreaths 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Repeat with the remaining dough.

  3. 3

Cut the candied cherries into small pieces and place them on the wreaths to decorate as desired, pressing lightly to adhere. Bake the cookies until set and the bottoms are lightly browned, 6-8 minutes.

  4. 4

Remove the cookies from the pans and transfer them to wire racks to cool. Store the cookies in an airtight container.
