In a bowl, combine the first 9 ingredients (tomatoes through pepper) and set aside.

Place the chopped cabbage in a 5- or 6-quart slow cooker. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and Italian sausage with the onion and garlic over medium-high heat until no longer pink, about 7-9 minutes. Crumble the meat and drain any excess fat. Spoon the cooked meat mixture over the cabbage in the slow cooker. Pour the tomato mixture over the top.

Cook on low heat for 5-6 hours, until the cabbage is tender and the flavors have blended. If desired, serve the stew over hot cooked rice and garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
