Line a 15x10x1-inch baking pan with foil and grease the foil with 1-1/2 teaspoons of the softened butter.

In a large, heavy saucepan, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Add the sugar, water, and corn syrup, and cook, stirring constantly, until a candy thermometer reaches 290°F (soft-crack stage).

Quickly pour the hot toffee mixture into the prepared pan and let it cool for 4 minutes. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top and let them stand for 3 minutes to melt. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee. Sprinkle the toasted almonds over the chocolate and press down lightly.

Allow the toffee to cool completely until the chocolate is firm. Break the toffee into bite-size pieces and store in airtight containers.
