Preheat oven to 400°F. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter, shortening, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 5-7 minutes. Add the flour, oats, salt, and baking soda, then mix well. If desired, stir in the chopped pecans. Set aside 2 cups of the oat mixture.

Press the remaining oat mixture into an ungreased 13x9-inch baking pan. In a separate bowl, toss the chopped apples with the 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour. Spread the apple mixture over the oat crust.

In a saucepan, melt the caramel candies and 3 tablespoons of butter over low heat. Drizzle the caramel mixture over the apple layer. Sprinkle the reserved 2 cups of oat mixture over the top.
