In a Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and sauté until softened. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute longer. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 3-5 minutes. Add the remaining sauce ingredients, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 50 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine the meatball ingredients (eggs, bread cubes, milk, Parmesan, garlic, salt, and pepper). Add the ground beef and mix lightly but thoroughly. Shape the mixture into 1-1/2-inch meatballs.

In a large skillet, heat the canola oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and brown them in batches until no longer pink. Drain the meatballs and add them to the simmering sauce. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until the flavors are blended. Serve the meatballs and sauce over hot, cooked spaghetti.
