In a food processor, blend the fresh or frozen blackberries and sugar until smooth. Press the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer to remove the seeds and pulp.

Stir the buttermilk into the blackberry puree. Transfer the mixture to a 13x9-inch baking dish and freeze for 1 hour or until the edges begin to firm up.

Stir the partially frozen mixture and continue freezing for 2 hours more, or until completely firm.

Just before serving, transfer the frozen sherbet to a food processor and process for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy.
